2nd Annual Ryan Volker and Rose Scarpa Memorial Scholarship 5k Ninja Run

The purpose of The Second Annual Ninja Run is to continue the legacy and to honor two remarkable young people: Rose Scarpa and Ryan Volker, who were killed in an automobile accident before they could start their lives together.  The first thing Rose ever wanted to be was a ninja and she worked hard toward that goal, earning a blue belt in Kung Fu by age ten and a gold belt in Tae Kwon Do at 22. One of her favorite past times was watching Kung Fu movies with her mom.  As she grew up, she discovered a love of cooking and pursued this goal with equal vigor; graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley and becoming a professional chef. While cooking at the Atlantis in Reno, she met and fell in love with Ryan, who was also a chef.  As a child Ryan and his brothers loved the "Ninja Turtles" and since their single Dad walked with a cane as did the Ninjas' master, they christened themselves the Turtles. Upon Ryan and Roses' passing, the three remaining brothers got matching Ninja Turtle tattoos. This is how the ninja theme originated.  Rose and Ryan were leaving for Oregon on the first leg of a trip to cook around the world when they were killed swerving to avoid a deer. Ryan was planning to propose to Rose upon their return. This run is in their honor and to raise money so some deserving culinary student can obtain a scholarship to the Culinary Institute of America to continue Rose and Ryan’s dream.   If you want to learn more or donate directly to the scholarship here is the link: www.ciaalumninetwork.com/RyanVolkerandRoseScarpaMemorialScholarship  Event details and scheduleCome have fun and dress as your favorite Ninja! 7th Annual Coffee Buzz 5K

International Appalachian is proud to announce that registration has opened for our 7th annual Coffee Buzz 5k!!! This year, the Coffee Buzz 5k will be run on the 7th of April, with the race starting at 10am. Sign up now to reserve your spot, and sign up as a group to receieve a discount!  The Coffee Buzz 5K is an annual race that International Appalachian (INTAPP) throws in order to raise money for the Landon Hill Study Abroad Scholarship.  INTAPP works hard to promote mutual respect for different cultures and to engage all students and community members in friendship and learning. The scholarship fund toward which all of our proceeds will go is in memory of one of our most dedicated members, Landon Hill, who passed away after contracting bacterial meningitis while studying abroad in Spain in the fall of 2011. Landon is a symbol of what our INTAPP members strive to be; while at Appalachian he was a leader in improving our organization and encouraged us all to hold ourselves accountable to reach our goals. He consistently reached out to the international students in meaningful ways—a fact made clear by the sheer number of Appalachian’s former international students he was able to visit at their home universities while he was abroad. Along with his passion for an international perspective, Landon truly enjoyed coffee. We thought there could be no better way to raise money for his scholarship than to run a 5K, and drink some coffee! 100% of the proceeds INTAPP raises go directly to the Landon Hill Memorial Scholarship. You can also donate directly to the Landon Hill Memorial Scholarship at the followling link: https://international.appstate.edu/about/make-gift  If you have any questions about this year's race, please feel free to contact Outreach Committee Head Gerard Ramos (ramosg@appstate.edu).    First 60 registrants are guaranteed a t-shirt!Event details and schedule Sunday, April 7th, 2019 Registration will close at midnight on April 6th, 2019.
